Ignore IRS "Notice
of Underreported Income"
The IRS does not send unsolicited e-mails
In my household, we were just this morning discussing
the huge quantity of spam email we have lately been receiving
that looks like it comes from the Internal Revenue Service.
Then I checked my mail and found an inquiry on this very subject
from a suspicious client. Always be suspicious if
you receive unsolicited e-mail from the IRS or any other entity
(such as your bank or credit card company).
Phony IRS e-mails are nothing new, but just
in the past week I have been receiving upwards of 20 e-mails
per day. They look like this:
From: "Internal Revenue Service"
<no-reply@irs.gov>
Subject: Notice of Underreported Income
Taxpayer ID: alisonjacks-00000174073547US
Tax Type: INCOME TAX
Issue: Unreported/Underreported Income (Fraud Application)
Please review your tax statement on Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) website (click on the link below):

Internal Revenue Service
This is nothing but MALICIOUS SPAM and you should
NOT click on the link. If you do you will likely
end up with some sort of scumware/spyware/virus on your computer.
This is not such a worry for MAC users, but PC users must
be very careful.
Should you receive a fake IRS e-mail, the IRS asks that you
refrain from opening any attachments and forward the message
to the following e-mail address: phishing@irs.gov.
The IRS issued a press
release on phony e-mails in 2007.
Remember that the IRS will never send you an unsolicited
e-mail.

Final
Deadline Only a Month Away
Contact me now if you still need help
filing your 2008 income tax return
I have received tax information
from most clients at this point. For the remainder of you,
data must be received by September 30 to avoid the 60% fall
fee surcharge. Currently we're at the 40% surcharge level,
which kicked in yesterday.
I will waive the fall surcharge
for new clients, but you still must provide your tax data
by September 30. I am not accepting any new clients past that
date for filing by October 15.
