January 6, 2011

Please remember that
we must have all of your
tax information in hand
no later than

Monday, March 21, 2011

for on-time filing by April 15,
or for help requesting an extension.

No exceptions.

This ensures that your work will be completed before the deadline.

Dear Friend,

Appointment reservations were sent out this week on Tuesday. Check your mailbox if you normally come in for an office appointment. Your appointment will be canceled if not confirmed by January 21. Return your Appointment Reservation Response Card without delay.

Didn't receive an appointment reservation? Need to change your appointment? Call or email us as soon as possible for the best choice of times.

This year we will not be rescheduling any appointments after February 1. Call now if you need to change your appointment. Openings are very limited and we can reserve only one time slot for you.

If you miss your appointment or must cancel after February 1, you can still mail in or drop off your tax records.

I am grateful for your business and your trust. If you have any questions, be sure to let me know.

All the best in 2011,

P.S. Today we are doing a bigger mailing to all current clients, not just those wanting office appointments. Please bring your signed 2010 Engagement Letter, Client Information pages, and the Client Questionnaire to your office appointment or send them in with your tax information.

Child Care Providers: Here Are
Some Super Suggestions for 2011

  • Streamline your record-keeping with Minute Menu Kids Pro software. After working with numerous child care providers, I think this is your best record keeping option. Some of you already use it to record meals for the Food Program, but it can do much more.

Start using Minute Menu today and cut way down on the time you spend dealing with your store receipts and preparing for tax time.
  • Start the new year by treating your child care helper as a proper employee. Though many people, including some tax pros, think otherwise, a day care helper is not considered an independent contractor and should not receive a Form 1099-MISC at the end of the year.

Get set up to give your helper a Form W-2 for 2011, even if you aren't doing so for 2010. This will guarantee the tax deductibility of your helper's wages, which is probably one of your biggest business expenses. Yes, there will be some employment taxes to pay, but those are a business deduction, too.

January is a great time to make the change to running proper payroll. You will sleep better. No more worrying that the IRS might discover your situation and ask you for all the payroll taxes, plus penalties. Your helper could be the one to tip them off--perhaps by applying for unemployment benefits. Sometimes this happens even after they've insisted on being paid under the table! Protect yourself.

Are you a California child care provider interested in my tax preparation services?

I would be happy to hear from you, but first, please read through my Frequently Asked Questions. If you are satisfied with my approach and the estimated fee, call 800-616-1268 or email me to receive a New Client Packet.

Contact me now if you want to make an office appointment. In a month or so, there will be very few openings left.
