Much to my children's dismay and constant annoyance, they were not allowed to have cell phones until their senior year in high school. For my youngest, that was just last year (2008). Shocking, isn't it? They certainly thought so! I had to stand firm in the face of numerous rounds of pleading. Now they are college students and regular cell phone users. Learning more about the dangers of cell phone radiation makes me glad I didn't cave in to their pressure earlier. It would have been so easy!
Starting at age 18, my children's lifetime exposure to cell phone radiation will be high. The situation is even worse for children who now carry cell phones at younger and younger ages. Adults should be alert to the danger this poses. Are we allowing our children to be guinea pigs when it comes to determining the long-term effects of microwave radiation on humans?
Below are the recommendations I recently emailed to my kids. I know that having this information will make a difference, even though I'm sure they rolled their eyes upon receiving it!
Limit talk time. Keep the phone away from direct contact with your ear. Switch ears. Texting is better. Turn the phone off whenever possible. Don't use it in roaming mode or in a car, because the radiation level is higher. Don't sleep with your phone nearby. Definitely not under your pillow!
A cell phone is not a toy.
