A family child care provider writes:
> Maybe you can help me find workers' comp insurance. I have offers from $1,000 per year and this is much too much for a part-time helper who maybe earns about $2,400 per year.
From what I hear, a premium of around $1,000 is actually very good for a family child care business. It seems that a premium in the range of $1,500 to $2,000 per year is more common.
Workers' compensation coverage for child care workers is quite high, because day care is classified as high risk. Some insurance companies don't even offer coverage to child care providers. It is also true that a "minimum premium" normally applies. Insurance companies won't write a policy for less than a certain amount, even if you only have one employee...even a part-time employee.
Here are a couple of insurance companies that have been suggested by other child care providers:
Ballast Point Insurance Services: More than one payroll client reports receiving excellent service and competitively low rates from this insurance agency. They can be reached at 619-550-1142.
Eric Chow: Eric is an independent agent associated with the Inforte Group, located in San Mateo. A client has recommended him and he can be reached at 415-828-6330. His email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
ADP Insurance Agency: I don't know if the insurance folks at ADP can come up with a competitive workers' comp quote for a family child care business, but my contact there would like you to give him a try. If you do, please let me know if you would recommend ADP to others. You can reach agent Earl D. Harris at 714-739-7434 or via email to Earl.Harris@adp.com.
State Fund: This is California's largest provider of workers' compensation insurance. The customer service number is 877-405-4545.
ALISON JACKS AND FCC PAYROLL HAVE NO DIRECT CONNECTION WITH THESE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND CANNOT MAKE ANY ENDORSEMENT OR RECOMMENDATION.
THIS LIST PROVIDES SOME SUGGESTIONS ONLY. YOU SHOULD GET POLICY QUOTES FROM SEVERAL COMPANIES AND COMPARE RATES.
